Then it should go back to 2.0 when your hand is removed again. That sounds exactly the same as my experience.

Since android 11 update the ambient light sensor and proximity sensors stopped working on pixel 3. If you are reusing the screen, be sure to pay special attention to the warnings in the opening procedure. Though it is quite a major issue, google has not clarified it yet.
